Cape Town, the Mother City of South Africa, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and was chosen as the world’s top tourist city for the seventh time in the 2019 Telegraph Awards.
Nestled between Table Mountain and the ocean, her variety of activities offer endless opportunities for entertainment, hiking and water sports. The varied landscape and suburbs create a cascade of different cultures, which blend into one and her people hold a warm and welcoming nature, offering a vibrant playground of differing colours, sights and sounds.
The Breede Valley
The Breede River Valley, surrounded by majestic mountains and beautiful winelands, are reason enough to visit this spectacular region. Only a short one hour drive out of Cape Town, one can venture into small towns such as Robertson, Worcester and Tulbagh, all steeped in country charm and heaps of character. The surrounding farmlands lend a sense of space, so often missed in the confines of the city. The well renowned Route 62 winds its way through the valley, en route to the Karoo, offering a variety of wine farms, restaurants and accommodation in a country setting .
The magical and mysterious Karoo is an area of solitude and other worldly scenery. Her calmness surrounds the soul during time spent here, and one feels revitalised and balanced after visiting. Travelling along the roads through the Karoo all concerns of busy lives are forgotten. The Karoo is an ideal getaway to enjoy serenity and solitude, and the seemingly harsh landscape holds many hidden wonders. On a clear night, uninterrupted by surrounding city lights, the Milky Way can be seen stretching across the sky. An abundance of National Parks and Nature Reserves offers the discerning client a wide choice of places in which to relax and take a breath.
The West Coast
Only a short distance from Cape Town, the West Coast offers a treasure trove of unspoilt beaches, mountain ranges and rich geographical diversity. The best time to visit this area is in Spring when the ground is carpeted with the most magnificent display of wild flowers. Both the quaint seaside villages and charming inland towns, exude a certain warmth and welcoming presence. The inland fruit farms thrive on the rich textured soil and their sweet offerings are a delight to the senses.
The raw and dramatic vistas and well renowned rock formations of the Cederberg are mesmerising, and draw you in at first sight. One is transported back to the earliest of human habitations with historical and archaelogical evidence in the form of abundant rock art and cave shelters, enticing one to imagine what life may have been like at that time. Home to the roaming Cape Leopard and other wild animals, it is a place of pristine natural habitat and beauty. A journey here is food for the soul as you find yourself drawn into the silent beauty of the landscape. A mere 3 hours out of Cape Town, a different world awaits.
Namaqualand is an area full of contrasts, where ancient history and modern life appear side by side. The harsh landscape ignites the senses with its raw beauty and the many roads weave their way through this surreal landscape, offering the visitor an array of sights and visual experiences. Nature is on full display with an abundance of wildlife present in the many National Parks and conservation areas.
